ILP "Participation" - Attend a Webinar
ILP Participation – Attend a Webinar
For this project I chose to attend
my first webinar. I’ve never watched a live lecture from home before, and I actually
really enjoyed learning this way. It was very casual; the teacher was speaking live
from her living room while being recorded. There was a chat group on the side
of the screen for all students to interact and answer the speaker’s
questions. She would show us a group of pictures and ask how some of them made us feel.At the end, she even took time to answer specific questions
from the chat group. Even though this class was online, it still felt very
interactive.
The Webinar was called “Literacy Intervention for Culturally and
Linguistically Diverse Learners” presented by: Dr. Almitra Berry-Jones.
During the webinar, I learned that since different kids are bringing different
cultures into the classroom, different stereotypes can occur. Kids can be left
out or “brain shamed” if they can’t speak fluent English because of their
culture. The classroom begins outside the room. Different values and beliefs go
into the making of a classroom. Kids need “equity” not “equality”. Teachers can have different learning styles for different cultured students, so every child
can get what they specifically need. Technology and new classroom software can
help greatly with tailoring lessons to each student’s specific needs. All in all,
this was a positive experience and I would watch a webinar again.
